Hello friend traveller!
I am back again on the blog to tell you more about my big New York City trip, especially about the transports.
There are a lot of possibilities to get to NYC center, as there are three main airports:
- JFK International,
- LaGuardia,
- Newark (in the New Jersey but very close anyway).
I will be landing in Newark Airport with the SAS Company, coming from Amsterdam (and via Stockholm but I will tell you more later about this 18 hours stopover).
Newark Airport is the second most important airport of New York, 15km away from Manhattan, and over 30 millions of passengers pass through it every year.
To get to Manhattan, there are several options, from taxis, shuttles, to buses or trains & subways.
Taxis are very expensive, so if you plan to have this kind of transport to go downtown, better to keep it for a flight landing in LaGuardia or JFK, which are closer to the city.
Shuttles: around $20 and 1h.
You may want to save money, and the best way for you (and fastest) will be to get on the Air train.
The Air Train is a quick and affordable service, connected to NJ Transit and Amtrak trains in a few minutes. Those trains will then bring you into Manhattan.
Here is the plan:
- take the AirTrain from one of the terminals (A, B or C) of Newark Airport towards Newark Liberty Airport train station. There, you will be connected to the NJ Transit and Amtrak trains. Cost: $5.50.
- From the station, you can take the NJ Transit. Then you will have two choices: you can either take the NJ transit to the Newark Penn station, then take the PATH (metro) station (30 min, $10,50); Or you can choose to take the NJ transit to the New York Penn Station, or W34 street. The second option is nearly 45 mins / $12.50 .

NYC underground

When being in NYC center, you will be able to travel by metro.
There are differentkinds of metro cards:
- the pay-per-ride metro card ($5.50 to $80) or
- the unlimited metro cards ( 7 days, 30 days or 7 days by express bus).
The Unlimited Ride 7-days Metrocard seems to be a fairly interesting transportation tip to save money if you stay in NYC for a limited time.
It costs $31 (and is good for unlimited subway and local bus rides until midnight, 7 days from day of first use.Note: the PATH, AirTrain, and Express buses do not accept 7- and 30-Day Unlimited Ride Metro cards).
Only remains to me to find the L line to Williamsburg!
